Questions

The questions people ask us late at night

Short, honest answers. Your own case may differ, and the first call is the place to ask about it.

Where do I even start?

With a free 30-minute call. You don't need documents or the right words; tell us what's happening and we'll tell you the first step.

Should I move out of the house?

Not before you talk to a lawyer, unless you're unsafe. Leaving can affect the parenting schedule and who stays in the home. If you're in danger, leave and call 911.

Will this go to court?

Most family cases settle on paper or in mediation. We prepare every case as if it might go to a judge, and quote that stage separately if it does.

How much will it cost?

Each stage has a flat fee, written down before we start. Our fees page shows what each one covers, and costs paid to others are listed separately.

Do you bill by the hour?

No. Calls and emails are part of the flat fee, so you never have to wonder whether a question is worth asking.

What happens to the children while this is going on?

We can ask the court for a temporary parenting schedule early, so the children have a routine while the rest is worked out.

Can I talk to my children about it?

Yes, simply and without blaming the other parent. We can point you to local parenting classes many courts require.

Do you work outside Portland?

Yes. We meet families anywhere in Oregon by video, and travel to hearings when a court needs us in person.

Can you represent both of us?

No. We can represent only one spouse or parent. Celia can mediate for both of you, as a neutral, but then none of us can represent either of you.

Still wondering where to start?

A first call doesn't make us your lawyers; a signed engagement letter does.
